The Art Of Contemplation

As we adjust to the new normal you might (like me) have found the novelty and routine of the first week or so to be wearing off.

Before we get into it, I’ll ask a question. If this goes on for 3 months, how do you want to look back at the time?

Imagine the future you, 3 months from now, catching up with friends, telling them about your lockdown experience…

The world has slowed and many of us have been given the gift of time. It’s still time out of our lifespan though – it won’t be added on, you won’t get it back, so do keep that in mind.

What I’m being mindful of is the balance (and difference!) between Consuming & Contemplating…

Let me explain. It’s easy to confuse the two, daydreaming might feel similar to watching netflix, but in the first you’re allowing your mind to wander, to open up to possibilities. In the second your mind is idling in neutral.

We all need some time with the switch on our mind in the off position, but don’t let it stay that way:

Consuming: watching TV, social media, internet, etc

Contemplating: resting, meditating, daydreaming, visualising etc

If you’re tired, anxious, stressed, then by all means do a little bit of Consuming, but don’t neglect Contemplating. Don’t neglect this chance to re-connect with yourself and reconfigure your life.

You might like the new story of your life (that you get to write) better than the old one.
